Tropical Autumn - Palm trees, treasures and secrets
From October 15 to November 23, 2026
This autumn, get away from it all and discover the world of palms in the Grandes Serres of the Jardin des Plantes! The habitats, morphology, history and human uses of these amazing plants will no longer hold any secrets for you...
The exhibition
For this 5th edition of Tropical Autumn, the Grandes Serres is showcasing the world of palm trees, with four main themes: their morphology, their habitats, their history and their use by man.
An invitation to marvel and escape, guided by a toucan silhouette to identify each of the large palm trees presented in the lush jungle of the greenhouses!
Palm trees, emblematic of the plant world
Present for more than 100 million years, palm trees play a key role in tropical ecosystems - providing shelter, food and resources - while also occupying a central place in many human cultures, both for food and for craft or symbolic uses.
Contrary to what their silhouette might suggest, palms are not trees in the classical sense: they are monocotyledonous plants, like banana trees. Their morphology is unique in the plant kingdom, with leaves that can measure several meters and the formation of a false trunk, or stipe.
Come and discover the incredible beauty of palm trees, simultaneously useful plants, cultural emblems and ecological pillars!
