Tetrapoda, Amphibia, Diadectomorpha, Limnocelidae
Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian, 290 million years ago
New Mexico, USA
Limnoscelis was a large animal measuring about 1.5 m in length. It represents the transition between amphibians and amniotes.
Limnoscelis was a carnivore or piscivore, in contrast to other members of its group such as the diadectomorphs which ate plants. Palaeontologists do not know whether Limnoscelis, while being close to the first reptiles, laid eggs with shells like amniotes or shell-less eggs like amphibians.
These animals must have lived side by side with Eryops, a fossil representative of which is on display in the gallery.
