Ginkgophytes
-
A tree with visible ovules
The ginkgophytes are related to cordaites and coniferophytes: all are descended from a common ancestor. Their method of reproduction is close to that of “ovule-bearing ferns” and cycadophytes. Their very visible ovules should not be confused with fruits!
The various species of ginkophytes enjoyed an almost global distribution during the Jurassic and Cretaceous: they were still present in France less than 2 million years ago.
