Coniferophytes

The first seeds
Coniferophytes became diverse during the Mesozoic. Silicified fossils of the wood of these large trees are frequently found in fossil bearing deposits because of the good preservation of their lignin-impregnated structure.
Coniferophytes bear separate male and female reproductive cones. The male cones contain stamens which release pollen grains. The scales of the female cones bear ovules which produce seeds following fertilization.
