The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle’s electron microscopy and microanalysis technical platform is a service shared by all the Muséum’s scientists, but also available to public and private external users. This service is particularly dedicated to samples from the environment, from the mineral to the living. The instruments available, a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), enable, on the one hand, the study of the ultrastructure of surfaces in order to specify the structural, taxinomic and physiological characters, and on the other hand, using ultra-thin slices, a better understanding of the internal organisation of cells and their metabolism. These two types of equipment are complementary.

The two microscopes are in different premises (12 and 45 rue Buffon, Paris 5th arrondissement), but they are close enough to facilitate their shared management. They are each equipped with a digital image capture system. Staff are assigned to each apparatus and are in charge of routine maintenance as well as its operation and image acquisition.
This technical platform is incorporated in the UMR 7245 Communication Molecules and Adaptation of Micro-organisms (CNRS/MNHN)
