The mission took place in a triangle between Perth, Albany and the most south-western tip of Australia (Margaret River) where Eucalyptus forests grow, surviving forests providing shelter to a biological diversity probably of ancient origins. This site is one of five Mediterranean biodiversity hotspots as defined by Myers et al. (2000).
Five national parks were selected as collection sites:
- Porongurup National Park,
- Bramley National Park,
- Shannon National Park,
- D’Entrecasteaux National Park,
- Midgegoroo National Park.
