The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle holds around 66,785,000 collection items, including 792,000 type specimens (physical specimens which define the existence of animal and plant species). These collections are kept in all of the Muséum’s sites, including the Jardin des Plantes Galleries (Paris 5th arrondissement) and the Musée de l’Homme (Paris 16th arrondissement).
In 2015, 13.5% of the collections and over 65% of the type specimens are now digitised. This general digitisation has been in progress for over 20 years. But operations such as the digitisation of the National Herbarium (2009-2012) and the renovation of the Musée de l’Homme (2009-2015) have quickened the rate of specimen digitisation. Apart from these specific projects, efforts have mainly been directed towards the type specimens.
