The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle is a scientific, cultural and professional public institution constituted in the form of a major institution. It is governed by Book VII of the Education Code and by the Decree of 3 October 2001 which defines its statutes, missions and supervisory ministries.

Art. 1st. - The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, hereinafter referred to as the Muséum, is a scientific, cultural and professional public institution constituted in the form of a major institution under Article L. 717-1 of the Education Code. It is subject to the provisions of this same code and the texts implementing them, save as otherwise provided in this decree.

Art. 2. – The Muséum is under the joint authority of the Ministries in charge of higher education, the environment and research. With regard to the administrative control of the institution, these ministries exercise the powers granted to the rector of the Academy, university chancellor, by the Education Code and the texts implementing them.
Each of these ministries may exercise the powers defined in the second paragraph of Article L. 719-7 of the same code.

In the field of natural and human science, the Muséum contributes to the production, development and sharing of knowledge about the Earth’s biological and geological diversity, about the diversity of cultures and societies and about the history of the planet.

For this purpose, its mission is to develop in synergy basic and applied research, expertise, the development, enrichment, conservation and provision of collections and information, and training including teaching, educational initiatives and the dissemination of scientific and technical culture for all audiences.
