The Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle conducts its research work in collaboration with all kinds of partners.


Research at the Muséum is primarily based on its research centres which today are all joint research centres (among the establishment’s 18 laboratories, 17 are in partnership with the CNRS, 4 with the IRD, 1 with the Inserm, 5 with the UPMC, 1 with the EHESS, 1 with the EPHE, close ties also having been developed with the Paris Diderot University, the INRAP and the Ifremer). These joint supervised PhDs and special partnerships at the centres form the Muséum’s first circle of scientific collaborations.

Research with the CNRS is based in particular upon a partnership between the Muséum and the Institute of Ecology and Environment (INEE) to which 11 laboratories are linked. This scheme means the establishment can receive support for different operations such as the acquisition of cutting-edge scientific equipment.

Constantly evolving development nationally and internationally
The Muséum’s joint research is constantly developing in France and abroad.
Nationally, joint research has grown with public stakeholders (research organisations, universities, Île-de-France region, local government, etc.) and private stakeholders alike.
Internationally, the establishment has targeted its activity on Europe and the Southern hemisphere, Madagascar and Brazil in particular. European collaborations continue and develop through the establishment’s involvement in European schemes (PCRD and Horizon 2020). Outside Europe, cooperative relationships have been established, mostly with universities, on themes such as the study of coral reefs, terrestrial and marine biodiversity in the South Pacific and bio-archaeology. Major naturalist expeditions, mainly based on an international partnership, were conducted in late 2012 in Papua New Guinea.
The Muséum forges partnerships with private companies based in France and abroad. They are from all different categories (major companies, intermediate-sized companies, SMEs, very small businesses and start-ups) and from all different sectors. It should be noted that the Muséum’s partnerships with industrial players have been accredited by competitiveness clusters such as Medicen and Cosmetic Valley, which reflects the quality of the institution’s joint research with the socio-economic world.
