NOTE ICHTYOLOGIQUE A following
association between juvenile Epinephelus marginatus (Serranidae)
and Myrichthys ocellatus (Ophichthidae) Leopoldo Cavaleri GERHARDINGER (1), Maurício HOSTIM-SILVA (2), Rafael SAMAGAIA (2) & João Pedro BARREIROS (3) (1) Instituto

- Information concerning Brazilian marine fish behaviour is scarce.
In this paper we present the first observation data on the interaction
between a dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834) and
the snake eel Myrichthys ocellatus (Lesueur, 1825). This episode
was casually observed over a reef inside the Arvoredo Marine Biological
Reserve, off central coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Although this
represents a single observation, the interaction between these two species
seems to be highly favourable to the grouper since it has the chance to
catch cryptic prey while simultaneously protecting its position besides
the eel against the approach of two other juvenile groupers. |
