NOTE ICHTYOLOGIQUE Fish community
structure of two Greek close gulfs (Lesvos Island, Aegean Sea) Bastien MÉRIGOT (1), Ioannis E. BATJAKAS (2) & Yves LETOURNEUR (1) (1) Université

cedex 9, FRANCE. Abstract.
- The fish communities of two Greek close gulfs were studied in Lesvos
Island, Aegean Sea, on 20 stations using a beach seine. Our results
indicated a relatively low species richness (23 species caught).
The mean densities (0.248 individuals.m-2, both gulfs
pooled together) and biomass (0.343 g.m-2) did not significantly
differ between the gulfs. In both gulfs, Liza aurata was the most
abundant species, followed by Sparus aurata in Kalloni and Sarpa
salpa in Geras. The distribution of fish within the gulfs is not driven
by the confinement of water masses, in spite of the wide surface area
of the gulfs and the narrowness of their link with the open sea. By contrast,
the nature of substratum, the macrophytobenthos cover and eutrophication
conditions might explain the pattern found. |
