FRANCE. Abstract.
- A specimen of the family Himantolophidae (footballfish) was collected
off western New Caledonia on 22 February 2002. The specimen is a large
female, 207 mm TL and 153 mm SL, with a well-developed illicium.
The specimen possesses morphological characteristics that are specific
both to Himantolophus albinares Maul, 1961, and H. pseudalbinares
Bertelsen & Krefft, 1988. Seventeen specimens of H. albinares
were previously recorded, all from the Atlantic Ocean, whereas only the
South African holotype is known for H. pseudalbinares. Re-examination
of available data from the previously collected material shows the single
morphological character separating H. albinares and H. pseudalbinares
to be polymorphic [unbifurcated versus bifurcated tips of main branches
of the distal escal appendage (DA)], and does not distinguish the two
species. Thus H. pseudalbinares is considered to be as a junior
synonym of H. albinares. The illicium of the species shows
large variations of shape and size, mainly related to ontogeny but also
to intra-specific variability. H. albinares is recorded here
for the first time in the Pacific Ocean and is the fourth species of the
genus with a poly-oceanic distribution. |
