Résumé.
- L’examen des collections des Muséums de Berlin et Londres
permet d’établir la série type de Myleus setiger
décrite par Müller et Troschel à partir de matériel
du Guiana. M. setiger est une espèce rhéophile
présente sur les fleuves qui drainent les boucliers guyanais et
central brésilien, dans le bassin amazonien, le bassin de l’Orénoque
et les fleuves côtiers des Guyanes. M. setiger et M. knerii
sont caractérisées par la position et la forme des dents,
mais M. knerii se différencie de M. setiger
par le nombre de rayons aux nageoires. La synonymie de Myletes divaricatus
Valenciennes, 1850 et M. doidyxodon Valenciennes, 1850 avec
Myleus setiger est établie. M. setiger diffère
de Myletes pacu Jardine & Schomburgk, 1841, par le nombre de
rayons aux nageoires et une taille maximale observée nettement
plus faible. Tometes Valenciennes, 1850, diffère de Myleus
Müller & Troschel par l’organisation de la denture et la
forme des dents.
Abstract. - Revision
of the status of Myleus setiger Müller & Troschel, 1844
and Myleus knerii (Steindachner, 1881) (Teleostei: Characidae:
Serrasalminae) with a complementary description of the two species.
Myleus setiger is described by Müller and Troschel from Surinam
and Essequibo basin in Guiana, and later designed type-species of Myleus
by Eigenmann. Afterwards Eigenmann placed M. setiger in synonymy
with Myleus pacu (Jardine & Schomburgk), a species described
from Guiana, followed by most of the subsequent authors. Several species,
including type-species of Tometes Valenciennes, are placed in synonymy
with M. pacu.
The examination of fish collection from Berlin and London Museums, make
it possible to establish the type-series of Myleus setiger described
by Müller and Troschel from specimens of Guiana. The examination
of complementary mate-rial make it possible to give a more complete description
of Myleus setiger on all its distribution area.
M. setiger is characterized by the position and shape of teeth,
the laminar shape of the dentary and premaxilary, the large olfactory
fossae, a fin and triangular mesethmoïd, and a combined low number
of anal and dorsal fin rays. The syno-nymy of Myletes divaricatus
Valenciennes, 1850 and M. doidyxodon Valenciennes, 1850 with
Myleus setiger is established. M. setiger differs from
Myletes pacu Jardine & Schomburgk, 1841 by the number of fin
rays and the smaller maximum observed size. Type-specimens of Tometes
trilobatus Valenciennes, type-species of Tometes, differ from
Myleus setiger by the organization and the shape of teeth.
M. setiger is a rheophilous species which occurs on the Guianian
and Central Brazilian shields Basin, in the Amazonian basin, the Orinoco
basin and the Guianian coastal rivers. M. setiger is
not cited from French Guiana and Amapá State in Brazil. Meristic
and morphometric characters of M. setiger are very conservative
on all its distribution area. Myleus knerii, described from the
Maroni basin, differs from M. setiger by the number of fin
rays and seems to replace it in this basin.
