NOTE ICHTYOLOGIQUE Observations
on the reproductive biology of Torpedo (Tetronarce) mackayana (Torpedinidae),
from the coast of Senegal (Eastern tropical Atlantic) (1) Laboratoire
dIchtyologie, Case 102, Université Montpellier II, Sciences
et Techniques du Languedoc, 34095 Montpellier, cedex
5, FRANCE. Abstract.
- Biological observations on Mackays torpedo
ray , Torpedo (Tetronarce) mackayana,
are reported from 78 specimens captured off the coast of Senegal: size
at first sexual maturity of the males and females, diameter and mass of
the ovocytes, period of vitellogenetic activity, gestation period, ovary
and uterine
fecundity. T. (Tetronarce) mackayana is a lecithotrophic
species. The species is not prolific and the two types of fecundity are
related to female
size. Among the embryos, fetuses and juveniles, males are more abundant
than females. The opposite phenomenon is observed in adults. Key-words. - Torpedinidae - Torpedo (Tetronarce) mackayana - Senegal - ASE - Reproductive biology. |
