- The fish community associated with rocky shores was studied by visual
census in July 2002 and February 2003 in the western Ligurian coast (NW
Italy, Mediterranean Sea). Two sites were chosen for the presence of a
shallow beachrock outcrops, with a plateau sloping gently from the surface
to 2-3 m depth. The underwater survey showed that these rocky reefs shelter
a diversified fish assemblage (43 species), with a lower number of
species recorded at site I than at site II (28 vs 38) and a slight
difference in mean fish density between sites I and II (138.33 ±
39.96 vs 213.83 ± 64.03 individuals per 125 m2).
The results revealed slight differences in size and trophic composition
among sites and sampling periods. These differences are to be related
to hydrodynamic conditions. This study provides a preliminary description
of the fish assemblage associated with this hard substrate and emphasizes
the importance of this type of rocky reef for maintaining coastal fish
community. |
