ICHTHYOLOGICAL NOTE Note on
the occurrence of two rare triggerfishes (Balistidae) from the Gulf of
Aqaba, northern Red Sea Albert BARANES (1) (1) The
Interuniversity Institute for Marine Sciences, PO Box 469, Eilat, ISRAEL. Abstract.
- Canthidermis macrolepis (Boulenger, 1888) is reported for
the first time from the Gulf of Aqaba; Abalistes stellatus (Anonymous,
1798) was collected for the first time from the west coast of the Gulf.
Four specimens of Canthidermis macrolepis (Boulenger, 1888) and
one specimen of Abalistes stellatus (Anonymous, 1798) were collected
from the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba at 30 m and transferred alive
at the Coral World Aquaria. Canthidermis macrolepis was reported
by Tortonese (1954) as a new species, Canthidermis longirostris,
from Dahlak (Eritrea). Gill and Randall (1997) synonymised C. longirostris
with C. macrolepis. Abalistes stellatus (Anonymous, 1798),
reported from the Red Sea by Dor (1984), was recorded by Khalaf and Disi
(1997) along the west coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. |
