Ce livre est le premier travail de synthèse sur les
Amphibiens et Reptiles terrestres de l'archipel Guadeloupéen.
Il est le résultat de plus de 66 semaines de terrain, de la
synthèse de la littérature existant sur ces îles,
de l'étude de la correspondance et des manuscrits
inédits des premiers naturalistes. Par ses nombreuses
données, ce livre apporte un éclairage nouveau sur
l'herpétofaune de ces îles.
Le premier chapitre traite de la géologie historique, en
corrélation avec les phénomènes de
spéciation et des milieux. Le deuxième est une
présentation des observations des anciens chroniqueurs et des
voyageurs-naturalistes du Muséum qui ont collecté des
Amphibiens et des Reptiles. Le troisième chapitre est une
analyse historique et biogéographique de
l'herpétofaune.
Six espèces d'Anoures, 5 de Tortues, 21 de Lézards dont
4 éteintes et 7 de Serpents sont détaillées.
Chaque espèce débute par un paragraphe sur sa
systématique, puis elle est décrite avec de nombreuses
photographies inédites et des dessins. Une carte des
Caraïbes et une carte détaillée du
département donnent la répartition de l'espèce.
Des informations sur l'habitat, la biologie, l'écologie, la
reproduction et parfois sur les mesures de protection ou les causes
de régression sont présentées. La
première annexe donne une liste critique de
l'herpétofaune par îles et îlets. Une seconde
indique la liste des Amphibiens et Reptiles du département
conservés au Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. Ce
livre est destiné aux naturalistes, aux enseignants, aux
chercheurs et aux gestionnaires.
This is the first comprehensive book on Amphibians and terrestrial
Reptiles from Guadeloupe (including Saint-Barthélemy and
Saint-Martin). It is the result of over 66 weeks of fieldwork, of
compiling nearly all earlier works, and of studying unpublished
correspondence and manuscript written by early naturalists. This book
contains a lot of new data providing new insights on the herpetofauna
of these islands.
The first chapter deals with historical geology in connection with
speciation events and with the islands' habitats. The second is a
presentation of observations made by early chroniclers and naturalist
travellers from the Paris Muséum who collected Herps. The
third chapter is an analysis of the herpetofauna from both historical
and biogeographical points of view.
Six Anouran, 5 Chelonian, 21 Lizard -including 4 extinct- and 7 Snake
species are considered. The presentation of each species begins with
a systematic account, and then it is described with numerous
unpublished coulour photographs, and line drawings. Species
distribution is shown on one map of the Caribbean Islands and on a
detailed map of the Guadeloupe Archipelago. Detailed information on
habitat, biology-ecology, reproduction and sometimes protection needs
and regression factors are given. There are two appendixes. The first
one gives a critical herpetofauna list for each island (even the
smallest) and the second one is the list of Amphibians and Reptiles
from these islands housed in the Paris Museum's collections. This
Natural History is intended for naturalists, teachers, researchers
and administrators.
