On Æsopic fables : moral of the fable and moral the tale
This paper analyses the relationships between tale and moral in Æsopic fables and leads to a reinterpretation of the semiology of the fable. The moral of the fable is usually considered as the key of the diegetic part of the fable which is thus reduced to a mere methaphorical argument. The moral is shown to be an optional and often late complement of the animal tales, and thus cannot be a structuring part of the fable. As a result, the diegetic part of the fable may bring, by itself, another kind of moral. The outstanding presence of animals in this part leads to the ideological stake in the comparison of animal with man. The purpose of the fable may not be the translation of a natural lesson but rather the expression of a much more radical cultural postulate: the idea of a basic bestiality of man.

Cet article propose, à partir d'une analyse des rapports entre le récit et la morale dans les fables ésopiques, une réinterprétation de la sémiologie de la fable. On a coutume de voir dans la morale la clé de la partie diégétique de la fable qu'elle réduirait au statut d'argument métaphorique. Nous montrons que, dans la mesure où la morale constitue un complément facultatif et souvent tardif des récits animaliers, elle ne s?impose pas comme une partie structurante de la fable. Dès lors, la partie diégétique de la fable pourrait bien, en elle-même, être porteuse d?un autre type de morale. La place prépondérante des animaux dans cette partie oblige alors à réfléchir sur l?enjeu idéologique de la confrontation de l?animal avec l?homme. Et il se pourrait, en fait, que la fable ait moins pour objet de traduire, à l'intention de l'homme, une leçon naturelle, que d?exprimer un présupposé culturel plus radical : l'idée d'une animalité foncière de l'homme.
