Research activities
We study the interface of the filarial parasite, the Wolbachia bacterial endosymbionts and the vertebrate host at the level of the host's immune response. This research focuses on the nature of the protective immune response and how the parasite and/or the bacteria modulate the host response and gains entrance to tissues to ensure its success.
We also study the biodiversity of filariae and the co-evolution of Wolbachia and Onchocercidae. Knowledge of animal filariae is essential to determine zoonosis and it also resulted in the creation of experimental models of filariases, like the current model we are using, Litomosoides sigmodontis.
